Red-Bellied Woodpecker

Red-bellied Woodpeckers are common in forests of the East. Their striking coloring makes them an unforgettable sight. They are often mistaken for the red-headed woodpecker, a somewhat rarer species that's mostly black on the back with big white wing patches.

An elderly woman stood looking out a large window one evening.

I asked if she was waiting for someone. She replied that she came here every evening. She was losing her eyesight and wanted to see every sunset she could before that time came. This proved to be a profound moment for me.

Fast forward to 2013, I was looking for something to fill the void that used to be spent caring for my sons and my ailing father. I saw the most beautiful sunset over the frozen lake, pulled my car over and stopped to enjoy it remembering the elderly woman's words.

Having only a smart phone, I snapped away at the beauty hoping to catch it.

My love for photography began.

Self-taught and told I had a "natural eye", I learned photography through trial and error. Combined with my love of nature and hiking, photography has become a passion.
